COERR has been working to help the border Karen refugees along Mae Sarieng areas since 1995. There have been many refugee children being born and growing up in camps. There are many activities being created and organized to enable these children and youth to grow and live their quality life with others in their community. Volunteering services are deemed necessary to help the children and youth to work and contribute to their society. In the middle of the rainy season, rainfalls and waterway usually caused the border roads to become almost impassable, because roads are usually washed away and muddy. This situation makes it difficult and dangerous for vehicles to drive on. Therefore, COERR arranged refugee youth volunteers in Mae La Oon camp to render their services in repairing the road. There were 59 refugees, 32 male and 27 female, volunteering in this service on July 15, 2017.
COERR staff trained these youth to understand about safety road and how to do repair and construction work. Youth were active in working together i.e., carrying the construction materials such as rock, sand, cement, tools, etc. to the site. Then construction was made successfully by refugee youth volunteers under the supervision of COERR.
The youth volunteers who joined the activities realized that the road repair work was beneficial to the community and reduced the danger of the passengers. They also learned about the volunteer spirit which created their self-esteem.
